4-Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. When 4-Nitrofurantoin is ingested, it is metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. One of the metabolites produced is 4-Nitrophenol. This metabolite has been found to be genotoxic and mutagenic in some studies, and is therefore a concern for potential adverse effects on human health.
